Restoring a Dream: How two adventurers turned an old Spanish finca into a beautiful home.

Sometimes the biggest adventures begin with the smallest ideas. For us it started with a simple plan to find a modest property near Spain's River Ebro. What we discovered instead was an aging finca settled deep within the Catalan countryside; a place with no mains electricity, no reliable water supply, and enough renovation work to make most people turn around and walk away.

We didn’t. We saw possibility.

Falling in Love with the Impossible
The old farmhouse wasn’t remotely what I had been searching for. Surrounded by olive groves and perched in a peaceful valley, it was larger, more remote, and significantly more ambitious than originally intended.
While I focused on practical concerns, Lyndsay immediately began imagining what the property could become. Around a dinner table that evening, what started as a property viewing evolved into a life-changing vision. Our dream? To transform a neglected rural farmhouse into a welcoming retreat for visitors eager to experience the beauty of Catalonia, and for anglers to fish the mighty River Ebro.
Of course, dreams rarely arrive with instruction manuals.

Learning as They Went
The reality of restoration quickly set in. There were solar panels to install, electrical systems to design, water supplies to organize, and countless construction projects to manage. Much of the work was carried out through determination, improvisation, and the occasional leap of faith.
Then came the inevitable mishaps. One particularly memorable moment occurred when freshly plastered walls revealed an
unexpected surprise: all the electrical cable tails had been plastered over. My initial horror was met by Lyndsay’s calmer solution, a bottle of wine and a healthy dose of laughter.
It became a pattern throughout our journey. Every setback eventually turned into a story. Every challenge became another chapter in the adventure.

Weathering More Than Renovations
The Catalan countryside had its own way of testing them. Winter temperatures dropped well below what we had expected in Spain. Snowstorms arrived. Torrential rain battered the property. On some mornings, simply getting out of bed required determination.
Yet these moments often created our strongest memories. There were evenings spent huddled around a fire, mornings watching the sun rise over ancient olive terraces, and countless walks through landscapes rich with history, wildlife, and tranquility. The finca was gradually changing, but so were we.

The Power of Partnership
Perhaps the most remarkable part of the journey wasn’t the renovation itself. It was the partnership behind it. Every decision, every challenge, and every triumph was shared. Whether navigating Spanish bureaucracy, hauling building materials across countries, or figuring out how to transport beloved pets to our new home, we approached it together.
The restoration became more than a construction project. It became a lesson in patience, resilience, trust, and teamwork. And in many ways, the house we rebuilt was also rebuilding us.
When a House Becomes a Home
Years later, the completed finca stood as proof that extraordinary things can emerge from unlikely beginnings. What started as a crumbling farmhouse became a place filled with family, friends, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
The walls held stories. The land held history. And every corner reflected the determination of two people who dared to believe in a dream.
