A house becomes a home through the people who fill it with life.
For Malcolm and Lyndsay, restoring Finca de San Juan was never just about repairing walls, installing solar panels, or creating guest accommodation. It was about building a place where family, friends, and neighbours could gather, share stories, and create a memory together. As the months passed and the finca slowly transformed, so too did it become a meeting place filled with laughter, celebration, and companionship.
Looking back, some of the most treasured moments had little to do with renovation and everything to do with the people who walked through the front door.
Welcoming Family to a New Life Spanish Hills
One of the greatest joys of life at the finca was introducing family members to the adventure Malcolm and Lyndsay had embarked upon. Children and relatives travelled from the United Kingdom to experience the Catalan countryside firsthand and see the progress being made on the old farmhouse.
Their visits brought fresh energy and enthusiasm to the project. Whether helping with construction work, moving materials, preparing meals, or simply offering encouragement, family members became part of the journey. Young visitors embraced the freedom of open spaces, while older generations enjoyed the slower pace and spectacular scenery.
Every visit strengthened the feeling that the finca was becoming more than a renovation project. It was becoming a family home.

Simple Gatherings, Lasting Memories
Some of the happiest moments were the simplest. Long summer evenings often ended around a barbecue, with tables filled with food, local wine, and lively conversation. Family and friends would gather under the warm Catalan sky, sharing stories about the day's adventures and making plans for tomorrow.
The meals themselves became occasions worth remembering. Fresh bread from the village, local produce from nearby markets, and home-cooked dishes created an atmosphere where nobody seemed to be in a hurry. Hours passed effortlessly as conversations drifted from fishing tales and renovation challenges to family memories and future dreams.
These gatherings reminded everyone that happiness is often found in the company of others rather than in grand events.
The Characters Who Made Life Special
Life at the finca was never short of colourful personalities. Friends, neighbours, and visitors all contributed to the story in their own way. Some arrived to help with construction projects, while others stopped by simply to share a drink and a conversation.
Even the family pets played their part. Reike, the loyal German Shepherd, became a familiar companion on walks across the countryside, while Bonzo the cat provided his own share of entertainment after making the long journey from England. Their occasional rivalry became another source of laughter and storytelling.
These small moments added warmth and humour to everyday life and helped turn ordinary days into cherished memories.
Celebrating Traditions Together
Festive occasions were especially meaningful. Christmas celebrations brought family together despite the distance from home. Meals were shared, gifts exchanged, and stories told late into the evening. Friends also gathered during birthdays, local festivals, and special occasions, creating a strong sense of community.
Living in rural Catalonia allowed Malcolm and Lyndsay to experience local customs while maintaining their own family traditions. The result was a unique blend of cultures, friendships, and experiences that enriched their lives.
More Than a House
Years after first arriving at Finca de San Juan, the memories that stood out most were not the renovations or the challenges overcome. They were the people, the laughter, and the connections built along the way.
The finca became a place where friendships deepened, families reunited, and everyday moments became lifelong memories.
